Golden Circle

A full day out exploring Iceland’s Golden Circle. Waterfalls, Geysers and snowy mountains!

After an hour or so of driving we went out to explore the continental rift at Thingvellir National Park. It was bitterly cold here, with easily a -25C wind chill with frostbite setting in within minutes!

The day started off grey but as it went on the sun began to shine. The views to distant mountains was still amazing.

The continental rift.

Heading down into the ravine.

A lovely view over the flat delta.

Lots of paths around this area but sadly no time to explore today.

We headed further towards the centre of Iceland and stopped at Strokkur, the geothermal area with its impressive Geysers.

The ground here is literally boiling.

Hot steam bubbling out of a pool.

Frozen trees from the steam vents nearby.

One of the many boiling pools in the area. From here we headed up onto a nearby hilltop to get a view of the surrounding landscape.

The view from only 70m or so above the surrounding land was amazing.

A view down to the Geysers.

It was flat for miles here but surrounded by high mountains.

Beautiful turquoise pool.

The main Geyser exploding. It went off like clockwork every 4-6 minutes.

A short drive further along the road lead us to Gullfoss Waterfall, one of the biggest in the area and wow was it spectacular today!

Gullfoss.

The view from round the side.

Looking upriver.
