Buttermere, The Lake District

Buttermere, The Lake District

I’m Joe, a longtime hillwalker, climber and photographer. I have been walking the mountains of the Lake District National Park for most of my life and have spent time exploring many other wild places in England, Scotland and Wales.

In recent years I have progressed onto making short films on my walks which could consist of only a few minutes on a short 2-3 hour hike to a 2 hour long piece detailing an entire long distance trail. Since the Covid-19 Pandemic things have changed… I’ve changed… the world has changed and I’ve noticed people seem to be more appreciative of the great outdoors, especially the countryside right on their doorstep!

I know I certainly appreciate my local countryside that little bit more. With this appreciation has come a desire to share my knowledge through the production of booklets and guidebooks of lesser known trails, starting local to me and branching out as things progress.

I grew up in the Broads National Park (when it wasn’t known as a National Park back then) and spent many days and evenings walking the riverbanks, woodlands and reedbed footpaths allowing me to discover countless hidden views, ruined mills and plenty of wildlife. This passion for being outside has come from my mother as she would frequently take me to the local Wildlife Trusts or RSPB Reserves to try and spot something interesting!

Frequent family holidays to the Lake District (more specifically Under Loughrigg) would allow me to go out exploring the fells with my family, visiting the nearby waterfalls and being out in nature. This would eventually spark a life long obsession with the Lakeland fells (I would possibly say on par with Alfred Wainwright!) and all things wild.

After studying an HND in Media (Moving Image) I did a few years in the film and television business, mainly working on independent films and TV series that were being shot locally to me but after realising its not possible to make a living out of this without moving to London I decided to change things up and move to the Lake District for a little while. This allowed me to head out and explore the fells on every available day off.

Making a career change

After living in the Lakes for about 18 months I headed back to the lowlands of East Anglia to begin training for a role I had wanted to do for many years and simply not had he opportunity to do. I began to train as a Paramedic and in 2018 gained my registration. This leads up to the present day as I continue my ‘day job’ as a Paramedic and in my spare time continue to work on developing this website, produce more films and create additional guidebooks.

What does the future hold?

A growing YouTube channel…

In the last year my YouTube Channel has grown as a massive rate which brings me great happiness knowing viewers are enjoying my content.

Books, Books and more Books…

I have literally dozens of trails that I want to complete locally and farther afield meaning there will be more trail guides coming soon. Also I recently finished my first National Park guide for The Broads.

Guided Walks…

Having been on many, many walks I recently considered completing my Mountain Leader Award to provide guided walks around Britain’s National Parks. Watch this space!
