Colchester

Distance: 7.56km (4.7 Miles)
Ascent: 67m (220ft)
Duration: 2 Hours

Today was set to be a beautiful sunny day and I didn’t want to waste it! I was going to be in Colchester anyway today so opted for a walk that takes in some of the towns historic features. The walk was taken from the Pathfinder Guides Outstanding Circular Walks in Essex.

The narrow road alongside Cymbeline Meadows. The bank is actually Lexden Dyke, an Iron Age Earthwork.

The River Colne at the beginning of the walk.

Crossing the River Colne as I follow a short section of the Colne Valley Path into Colchester.

The Balkerne Gate, the largest Roman Gateway in Britain! An outstanding historic feature!

Colchester Castle which was built on top of a Roman Temple and made out of reused Roman material. This is reportedly the largest Norman Keep in Europe and now a museum with some amazing Roman artefacts inside.
