The Strid (Wharfedale)

Distance: 6.54km (4.06 Miles)
Ascent: 125m (410ft)
Duration: 2 Hours

Having pre-booked the car park we headed along the permissive path to a superb viewpoint over the River Wharfe. This was my first time to Wharfedale and although the weather was poor it was still lovely to be out in the Dales.

One of the highlights along todays walk. This is The Strid, a narrowing of the River Wharfe which usually culminates in a Waterfall but today due to heavy rain its more of a torrent through the rocks!

The Strid.

Looking down river where the Wharfe widens again.

Following the riverbank path towards Bolton Abbey. We didn’t go as far as the abbey, instead crossing at the next bridge about 1.4 miles down river.

The Wharfe splits close to the Valley of Desolation. That place sounds interesting but no time to see it today.

Our bridge by the next tea room. I think that is Beamsley Moor behind.

Crossing the River.

Looking up river.

Our route.

Looking down to The Strid.

A wide shot of the same view. It was lovely to stand here and watch several Nuthatches looking for food in the trees.

Another view to The Strid from the woodland path.

A brief view out the woodland to the hills beyond.

This is The Aqueduct, a route for walkers to cross the river and just 1/4 of a mile before Barden Bridge.

Beautiful lichen on the tree.

The Aqueduct.

Crossing the Wharfe again.

The remains of Barden Tower which was a shooting lodge dating to the 15th Century I think. Part of it is now a cafe and a perfect place to aim for during a walk through the Bolton Abbey Estate.
